Bidjar or Bijar rugs come from the Kurdish town of Bijar-e Garrus in north-western Iran. The town of is one of the highest towns in Iran with an elevation almost 600 metres higher than the peak of Ben Nevis.
The earliest Bijar carpet can be traced back the around 550-330 BC. They are renowned for their heavy weight and high durability. This is created by ‘wet weaving’ where the wool is kept wet during the weaving process. Once the carpet is completed the rug is allowed to dry. As the wool dries it expands and creates a dense, near impenetrable surface.
Our Bidjar carpets can be viewed at our Preston store and are available to purchase in store or online with up to 12 months interest free credit.
