Kazak (Qazax)

Kazak (or Qazax) carpets take their name from a small city in the Northwest of Azerbaijan. Kazak rugs however are mainly woven by the people of Afghanistan and in more resent years by nomadic Afghans in Pakistan. The designs are influenced by Caucasian designs from Russia and the former Soviet regions as well as patterns found in rugs from the nothern parts of the Persian empire.

Most Kazak carpets have a geometric design and usually feature red, blue, yellow or gold colours. Many designs feature mediallions as well as animals and flowers, not unlike tribal rugs.
